Normally when I’m in Portland, Seattle, or some other large city, I research where I want to eat prior to departing and have my dining out plans all mapped out. I’m just into food like that. This time I just didn’t have my act together and the only dining out we did was lunch at Besaw’s on NW 23rd. Not the newest or hippest place in PDX, but it’s kid-friendly and they do a good breakfast.
Next time I’m in Portland, I’m hitting Pok Pok (again), Le Pigeon, and Bunk Sandwiches.

My Journey to South Korea began with a 14 hour flight from JFK to Incheon Airport outside of Seoul. I arrived at 4 am and an hour and a half later after going through immigration and customs I step outside the terminal and am struck by the high humidity. Korean Air has a great limousine bus service that costs 15,000 won (about $15) that takes you the 60-80 minute ride into Seoul to popular hotels and city destinations, walk all the way down to door 11 and the ticket booth is just outside the door on the left. I arrived at the Grand Hyatt Seoul and met Brendan who has been here for a few days already. I slept a lot on the plane so I thought I wasn’t too tired but decided it would be a good idea to sleep for a while. I woke up at 10:30 am and thought I’ll just sleep for another hour and then go get some lunch, next thing I know it’s 3 pm. Dinner at the hotel and an early evening, of course my internal clock is completely in disarray and I woke at 2 am completely wide awake, of course it didn’t help that I had slept so much that afternoon.

On Sunday when I left Boston there was a timely article in the Boston Globe about visiting the DMZ. I decided to take a tour of the Demilitarized Zone DMZ today. South and North Korea are still in a state of war since a peace treaty has never been signed but on July 27, 1953 they signed an armistice agreement (cease fire). There are two parts of the tour, the DMZ tour and the Panmunjeom or the Joint Security Area (JSA) tour. On the tour there are very strict rules regarding photography, where you can go (because of the mine fields) and everyone goes through a military checkpoint.
The DMZ is a buffer zone of 2km on each side between South and North Korea. tour consists of visiting several sites within the area which include:
- The Unification Park – This is a park that they hope will eventually have both North and South Koreans enjoying together.
- The Third Infiltration Tunnel – The South Koreans have found 4 tunnels that North Korea has built to invade South Korea and they believe there are more. The tunnel we visited was 25 stories underground and was about 5 feet high. It was designed to get 30,000 troops into South Korea in an hour. Unfortunately no photography was allowed in the tunnel and you had to leave your bags in a locker above ground.
- Observatory – You can see North Korea from here, but you cannot take pictures past a yellow line. The soldiers were very nice and were helping take pictures for people.
After a traditional Korean lunch we head off to the second half of the tour to Panmunjeom or the Joint Security Area (JSA). This part of the tour is much stricter because you will actually step foot in North Korea and will be in sight of North Korean soldiers. The JSA is where the armistice agreement was signed and is the only place that North and South Koreans come together to make efforts toward peace.
- Before entering the JSA we all had to sign a “Visitor’s Declaration” which basically outlined the rules and that we were aware that we were entering a hostile area and there was a possibility of injury or death due to enemy action.
- Citizens from 55 countries including China, Russia, and Iraq are required to get special permission to enter the JSA which requires approximately one week.
- A strict dress code is required to get into the JSA, long sleeves, pants and no flip flops or open toed shoes/sandals.
- After entering the JSA we had to switch buses, we were escorted by a soldier the entire time and leave all our belongings on our bus, although we could take a camera.
- Camera lenses could not be more than a 100mm zoom lens.
- Photography was only allowed at certain points of the tour and we were not allowed to stand on the bus or take pictures from the bus, although at one point they gave us permission as we passed the North Korean buildings and soldiers and when we passed the Bridge of No Return which is where POW’s were exchanged.
The JSA tour was much more interesting than the DMZ tour, so if you plan a visit I would recommend either the full day tour which covers both or the half day tour for the JSA.

Yesterday we drove across the state to the Portland area. Such a long drive with two restless kids, but we did it and got in just in time to enjoy the evening sun on the back porch at my sister’s house over a glass of vino. Perfect. My sister and brother-in-law own a winery north of Portland and have a small estate vineyard, so before dinner I took the kids out to try to find some berries on the bushes my brother-in-law planted on the east edge of the vineyard. The berry picking was sparse, but it was nice to get out and romp around.
Today the winery is closed (which means my sister is free to play) so we’re heading downtown for a bit of shopping and exploring. Oh, and I promised the kids a trip to Finnegans. I’ve brought my work with me and will be getting up some blog posts in the next few days. Happy Monday!

I will be out of the office from Friday, July 23rd until Thursday, August 5th. On Saturday, July 24th I will be photographing Abby and Jason’s wedding in Rye, New Hampshire (blog post coming soon!) and on Sunday I will be flying to Seoul, South Korea. On the itinerary will also be a short trip to Tokyo, Japan. Of course I am always available by email, but there may be some delay in my responding since I will be on the other side of the world. You’ll notice I’ll be crossing the International Dateline, so I lose a day going over but get to relive an entire day on the way back!
Please feel free to follow my journey!
