We absolutely love when couples are as excited about their portraits as we are–and after talking with Ben & Lauren about their style, and looking through some of Lauren’s personal photography portfolio, we set out on a scouting trip to find the best spots for their wedding day portraits. Honestly, we love having this kind of creative collaboration with our couples, as it lends itself to some of the most unique, personal, and creative portraits. This is especially true when our couples are up for anything, even if it means braving muddy wheat fields, thorns, or looming rainstorms.

Ben and Lauren, thank you for trusting us and for allowing us to share in your special day. You are beautiful inside and out, and we are so inspired by your love for Christ and the way you seek to live your lives for Him on a daily basis. Keep Him at the center of your marriage, serve and love each other daily, and we know you will enjoy a long and happy life together. We love you both, and we hope you enjoy your photos!

I am putting together some images to submit for the ISPWP contest coming up, and I came across this image from Nick and Surya‘s wedding I shot with Jonas, and it simply made me smile. There is such authentic joy in this moment. The expression on her face is priceless. It’s somewhere between laughter and sheer happiness. It isn’t until a minute later that I realize that there is someone else in the room. But I suppose that’s what makes a good frame, you want to look at it for a while. Anyway, I love these types of frames. I don’t know if it’s technically perfect, if it follows the proper rules, or hell, if anyone else in the world likes it or feels the same way I do about it, but I could stare at it for hours.

I absolutely love the ceremony at weddings. It’s probably my favorite thing to shoot, as long as I have access to it. Nothing worse than having to stand 200 feet behind and one story up from the story I am trying to tell. Hint for future brides, talk to your venue/church/officiant. Find out what their opinions are about photographers and having them move around or getting close during the ceremony. Many churches/officiants don’t allow it, many don’t care, but the last thing you want is to be surprised on your wedding day. This can be a touchy subject for some. It should be. The ceremony is the entire point of why we are “gathering here today”. If you’re hiring me to shoot your wedding, you want me close during the ceremony, there’s just no way around it. I have been told by some church coordinators that I am not allowed to move during the ceremony because it’s a “worship service”. Well, worship means and encompasses many things, and that is exactly what I am doing when I am shooting a ceremony. Anyway, I do try and be unobtrusive, and I have gotten very good at finding ways to get around without being noticed, but I will not hesitate to get close if the story calls for it.

This series is from one of my favorite ceremonies, good friends of mine Jesse and Rachel, and one in which I was not allowed to move. I did anyway, and I’m glad I did. I did get a verbal lashing though. Worth it.
