Somedays just call for turning on my iPod, clicking to my “Happy Boppy” playlist and dancing it out around the house. That is the one surefire method to get me out of a funk! I mean come ON, who can still be sad after listening to “I Like To Move It” and busting a move or two??? I know I can’t!!! So today’s favorite thing is something that almost everyone I know could use, a $50 gift card to iTunes!!
To enter, comment below and tell me what your go-to happy song is!
Congrats Heidi!!! BOOM!

Going in hand with my post yesterday, I bring you my favorite thing for day #2, Spa Finder!!! Today’s random commenter will get a $50 gift card to Spa Finder.
In typical Corey style, my first ever massage appointment with my awesome friend Jill didn’t go as planned. I had never gone before and Jill planned a girl spa day for a group of us before we went to a concert that evening. I was ridiculously excited but due to a screw up on the spa’s end, I didn’t get a massage. I did end up being able to be squeezed in for a facial, which was amazing, but not what I had looked forward to for so long. Eventually though, ironically the day of my wedding, I did have a full body massage and I have to admit, it was pretty darn relaxing. Since then, I’ve been back a few times but my favorite treatment has always remained to be facials. I know it sounds weird, but I absolutely love when they massage your sinuses! I think that I have just not found the right body massage for me yet… but I’m willing to keep trying! There are a lot of great local places so I go whenever I remember to make appointments. I also admit that I’m quite obsessed with the cucumber water they serve. YUM! I seem to prefer the places that have the total spa package rather than a table tossed in a salon. Ahhh, I can feel my body melting just typing this all out.
Today’s commenter question… have you ever got a massage or spa treatment? If so, what kind is your favorite? Either way… if you win, what would be the service you’d choose to have done?
Congratulations Katie!!!!!

Summer is always a bittersweet time for me. I love summer, don’t get me wrong – the sun, the smells, the cicadas singing – I love it all. However in the midst of all things summery lies a bit of sadness as this time of year is when I miss my family the most. Summer is full of birthdays of those that are gone (today would be my brother’s 39th birthday), death anniversaries for when they left and wedding anniversaries of those that are widowed. It’s full of memories of my family when everyone was alive and we’d spend weeks at the beach, weekends camping and having fun at local festivals. While Christmas will probably always be the hardest day of the year for me (my Mom died on Christmas, my Grandmother the day after and the memories of family filled holidays are always bittersweet) it’s easily followed up by the long days of summer as the hardest time. I’ve never been one to brood but if there was a time for a brood to come on, today would be the start of a full-fledged brooding for the next two weeks when the most anniversaries hit all at once. Thankfully, one thing my Dad did leave me with the outlook on life that it’s too short to brood and when life hands you a batch of lemons, you make lemonade of course!!
I’ve always felt the best about myself, and life in general, when I give things away. I also feel better when I do a little shopping therapy. Who doesn’t??!? So today I’m going to start a series of giveaways for my awesome clients/readers!
Today’s giveaway is to my favorite store… AMAZON! If you know me, you will know that I’m a huge huge huge fan. HUGE. If I could order all my groceries through Amazon, I’d never leave the house to shop. You should see my house at Christmas. It’s insane. I think I single handedly keep my UPS man employed! To a random commenter I will give a $50 giftcard to shop away to their hearts content! Since I hate contests, I’ll be using random.org to choose the commenter #.
To enter, comment before tomorrow’s post goes up and tell me how you cope with stress and/or sadness? If you shop, is there a specific thing you buy???
Contest Closed!!! Today’s winner is Melissa!!!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time again for our annual Free Wedding Photography Contest!!! This is, by far, one of the favorite things that Stacey and I do with our business each year!
We’ve been so blessed to meet two amazing couples these past few years! We shot our First Year winners, Cassidy and Ben’s wedding last Spring …

… and can’t wait for Jessica and Mark’s big day this fall!

Sooo…… here’s the low down for this year’s contest …
Stacey and I are announcing today that we want to shoot someone’s wedding completely free of charge in 2011. But before you get excited…there’s a catch.
We’re looking for a couple that has a story to tell. Whether it’s a hardship they’ve overcome, or one they’re currently facing….we want to hear their story. And we want them, a family member or a friend to tell us why they feel we should shoot their wedding for free. However, it DOESN’T take a story of tough times or being down on your luck to win the contest. Perhaps you know a couple getting married soon who are active in the community, volunteer, or are simply amazing people. Tell us about them!!!
So here’s what the couple that we choose will get in return for their story:
- A full day of wedding coverage by Stacey and Brandon
- Their wedding proofs on a copyright-free DVD
- A free engagement shoot, including a copyright-free DVD of the images
- A free bridal shoot, including a copyright-free DVD of the images
Here are the guidelines:
- The couple, or a family member or friend of the couple, must submit a written story via email of why they feel they deserve a free wedding from Gresham Photography.
- The submission must include a picture of the couple for us to use when we announce the winner.
- Family and friends of the couple are more than welcome to submit for the couple, but please be sure they would want us to shoot their wedding before you do!
- The couple can be getting married anywhere in the world in 2011, but travel expenses are not included in the giveaway. While we will travel anywhere to shoot your big day, we simply can’t afford to pay for airfare, or travel outside of 100 miles from Birmingham, Alabama without a little help. We welcome submission from anywhere, but with the understanding that you might have to help out with some travel expenses if we pick you.
- Your date must be open on our calendar. We will hold all dates of submissions we receive open until a winner has been chosen.
- Your submission must be TRUE. This contest IS for couples who have overcome great odds, hardships, or are otherwise deserving of free wedding photography. This contest IS NOT for people who can afford a photographer, and just want to win something free.
Please include the following in your submission:
- The bride and grooms’ first and last names.
- Their story (How they met, got engaged, and why they deserve this free wedding coverage)
- Contact information for both of them.
- The wedding date and location (We at least need to know the city/town where the wedding will be.)
- A digital picture of the couple measuring no less than 900 pixels in size on its longest side. (The image is solely used in our blog posts announcing the finalists and winners, not in the judging/decision making regarding the contest!)
- All submission must be received by midnight on August 1, 2010.
- The final three deserving couples will be announced on our blog on August 8, 2010 by midnight.
- The final couple will be announced and contacted by August 15, 2010!!!
- Please email your submissions to brandon@simple-color.com.
Our selection committee will be made up of two of our closest friends, my brother and his wife, both our sets of parents, and 2010 Winners, Jessica and Mark. Stacey and I will choose the three finalists, but will leave the big winners up to our family and friends.
If you’d like to know more about the history of the Free Wedding Photography Contest, check out the blog post stream from the past to years!
That’s it! We look forward to hearing from you and please feel free to contact me with any questions!
-Brandon

Heather’s mom is notorious for telling on herself. If she does something silly or embarrassing history has proven she’ll tell at least one person. We know all moms aren’t as forthcoming, so in honor of Mother’s Day we want you to tattle on your mom.
Tell us the funniest, most embarrassing, or weirdest story about your mom and you could score an awesome Mother’s Day gift. We’ll give the winning entry a gift certificate for a family session and 20 x 30 canvas of mom’s choice. That’s like giving your mom $850 without even opening your wallet!
So open an email and tell us what’s up. Be sure to include your name and phone number so we can contact you if you win. Entries are due May 5th. That night we’ll settle in with a glass of wine and maybe an abacus to tally the winner.
Plus (because everyone hates to be a loser) we’ll give you $100 off a family session just for entering.
Go… now… write!
Contest Rules
- Submissions must be made by 7 p.m. May 5, 2010, and can be any length. Pictures are welcome, if you think it will help your case, but they’re not necessary.
- The prize is a Family Session from Hawes Photography and one 20 x 30 canvas. The session must be scheduled by August 31, 2010.
- Hawes Photography will decide the winner using a complex mathematical formula and the “who can yell the loudest” style of debate. Whatever we say is final.
- We also reserve the right to change this contest without notice… just because.
- We will notify the winner by Thursday, May 6 and arrange for delivery of a gift certificate he/she can present to his/her mom.
- All entries that include a full sentence will qualify for $100 off a family session. Sessions must be scheduled by May 31, 2010.
- Send entry emails to aaron@hawesphotography.com
Because inquiring minds like to know… we present some Family Session FAQs
Q: Which family members are usually included in a session?
A: You’ll want to bring along anyone you consider “immediate” family members. That generally includes your spouse and kids (and kid’s spouses and associated grand kids). It can also mean the family dog. If that group is larger than 10 people, contact us for special pricing.
Q: We want some pictures but we’re not sure where we would shoot. Can you help?
A: Absolutely! When you contact us to book your session we can start the process of deciding what and where to shoot. We’re a great resource for locations.
Q: We were thinking about dressing alike, maybe jeans and white shirts. Is that cool?
A: No. Have you ever left the house wearing the same clothes??? We’re not saying you shouldn’t have a cohesive look, but matchy-matchy is no allowed.
Q: How long will it take before we see the pictures?
A: We will schedule your session and viewing at the same time. Usually we can have you in within two weeks of the session.
Q: Do we have to have a viewing? Can you just put the images online?
A: The viewing isn’t mandatory, but it’s a great way to see the many, many options we have for printing and displaying your pictures. Plus we’re photographers, not salespeople, so there’s never pressure to purchase something you want. That being said, we’ll put your images online after the viewing so you can share them with family and friends.
Q: If my parents want pictures do I have to collect their order and money or can you just handle it?
A: We’d love to work with any family member so you don’t have to serve as a middle man. The online proofing has a shopping cart for web savy family members. And we’re happy to take phone or email orders as well.
Q: Can I purchase this session as a gift?
A: Of course! We’ll print a gift certificate for the family of your choice and give them 3 months to redeem it.
Q: While we’re on the subject of pictures, my high school senior needs some. Do you do those as well?
A: Yep! Just contact us for pricing and availability.

It took awhile, but I finally had the chance to meet Jessica and Mark last weekend in person! If you don’t remember, these two won our Free Wedding Photography Contest 2.0 for 2010, and I was so pumped to shoot their engagement session and get to know them a little better!
An added bonus was the location they chose for the shoot. I’ve heard amazing things about Serenbe, but was blown away with how gorgeous this place was! It was a photographer’s dream come true, and I have to thank Jessica and Mark for letting me drag them around the grounds until well after dark!
We started out shooting some portraits with Mark and Jessica’s dog Femmy, who was all too willing to mug for some portraits. If you know Stacey and I at all, you know we’re big dog people … so forgive me if there’s a few too many puppy portraits!

The sun was still hanging a little high in the sky, so we headed into the “town” at Serenbe for a quick bight to eat and a wardrobe change before coming out for some KILLER sunset light …

We finished off the day with some night shots around the village …

Mark and Jessica, we feel so blessed to be a part of your big day. We can’t wait for your wedding later this year!
