Word from home, part 2.

View Photographer Profile

I don’t think Nathan is completely aware of the fact that his last letter to me made it on my blog. I think someone mentioned it in front of him, but he didn’t seem to notice. The thing is, I got a second letter on Tuesday, which pretty much assures me he didn’t know because the boy doesn’t like attention.

Here it is, (maybe the start of a new blog feature here?), word from home, part deux:

“I wish I was brave enough to tell you in person.  So many times I’ve come close, but chickened out.  But you deserve to know.  There’s no easy way to say it, so here it goes:  I like lame movies.  When you’re gone, I watch them.  Tonight I watched The Warriors.  I’ve already seen it, but that didn’t matter.  I re-watched to see what I’d forgotten over the years.  I wish I could say I was embracing the campy nature or making fun of it, but the truth is far sadder.  I embrace the terrible.  Stallone, Van Damme, Segal, I’ve watched it all.  I thought I’d hit rock bottom last weekend when I watched a French movie with the guy from the Professional.  It was terrible.  The plot was meaningless.  I walked away ashamed.  But here I am again.  I don’t want your pity; I don’t deserve it.  And please don’t blame Netflix.  Sure they made it easier, but the disease is mine.  Know that nothing I’ve watched is a reflection on you; you were always entertaining.

PS the cats knew and said nothing; feel free to blame them.

PPS  sorry, moment of weakness.  The cats tried to convince me to confess, but I lied and said I’d already done it.”

Sorry, no special signature on this one. Just a lone word document sitting on my desktop that I discovered upon my return from dinner at LaDuni with Vivian and Julie. I hope your Thursday is lovely!

When I started as a photographer, you wouldn’t be able to find me in front of the camera. No way, no how, no matter how much Dr. Pepper was involved. I remember having to have a headshot taken for the newspaper, and waiting until the last day with Jason (photo editor at the time) still having to coax me into it. There’s about two whole images from those early days. One was taken candidly as I held an off-brand flash in my hand, deeply pondering its ability to sync with my Canon camera, and the other is of my rear with a sign on it : I was both shooting and recruiting for the newspaper that day on campus. Multi-tasking at it’s finest.

And then one day all of that changed. I was recruited to model for David Beckstead at the 2010 photography convention in Nashville and it was fun. So much so that one day of dress up turned into three. And I was shot by oodles of my closest friends and most respected colleagues.

At this year’s convention in San Antonio, the ideas began popping up early on – I would have my car and the ability to pack it solid full of lighting equipment and some outfits. But most of all – I would have the one thing in the world that Nathan loves more than me – the car!

And I called Brian Mullins, who is based of Raleigh, North Carolina. I just knew he would be perfect for the session and it doesn’t hurt that he has an almost unequaled obsession with the car.

So there we were in January, in San Antonio, on a rooftop. It was an amazing 70 degrees (thank you, crazy Texas weather). Brian, with the lighting support of Daniel Lane, (Columbia, South Carolina) and Ryan Brenizer (New York City, New York) made the experience amazing.

And Brian’s images? Well, they left me speechless. They were so much more than I could have ever hoped for.

But my experience didn’t end there. Brian sent me the images and a preview print in a gorgeous box. Is this what’s it like to have professional images taken? Well, wow, just wow.

White by Vera Wang Collection

View Photographer Profile

Have you noticed that 2011 seems to be year for new bridal collections? Stores from Anthropologie to White Black Market have debuted their bridal lines this year. I think my head is spinning with new options!

But I have been waiting for one in particular  – White by Vera Wang.

I’ve been entranced by Vera Wang’s designs ever since I found out the name that was associated with those heavenly creations. The models, always perfectly styled somehow glided in those Vera Wang wedding dresses, which combined a whimsical architectural quality and moved with what could only be called a quiet grace. I could spot those creations from a mile away and would sigh softly every time I was given the chance to handle one on a wedding day as the photographer of this glorious beauty. My excitement now that the collection has been introduced as a more budget-friendly option is without bounds, propelling me poke my husband with determination and beg for a reason to purchase what the website describes as a ‘strapless organza fit and flare gown with draped bodice and hand cut-bias flange skirt. In blush, of course.

SuperBowl XLV

View Photographer Profile

So there I am, a part of SuperBowl XLV, and it’s everything and nothing like what I expected it to be.

I arrived at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington around noon and made my way to one of the Field Level Clubs. Steve Cooley of Carpe Vita Photography was leading the charge as he was the reason that we were all there. Steve had been retained by the NFL and he had extended a few key shooting positions to a some choice wedding photographers (myself, Stacey Pinkney of Simple Moments Photography, and Jassen) that he thought could capture the spirit of the Super Bowl.

My assignment was to cover the Press Club, also known as the Miller Lite Lounge on the home team side. As you can see, I wore a very sporting Cowboys blue and white. Thanks to Chris Mignemi from Fox News Channel for the image!

My assignment was complete around 4:30 and I had the amazing opportunity to shoot some images of the Green Bay Packers from my vantage point on the field.

I was able to take a few shots of the Black Eyed Peas coming down from the massive tv screen. They did have their backs to us for their performance. 50/50 chance of being on the correct side, of course :)

Getting organized.

I’ve found myself in the lull that is the beginning of each year. I have another month before wedding season gets into full swing so I spend my time updating my website, setting goals for the upcoming year and looking at last year’s batch of cds/papers/books. This is what I call my homeless stacks – things that just don’t have a home and I haven’t figured out what to do with. I’m sure the majority of it will meet my trashcan but I just have to pull that trigger.

Towards the end of last year, I took on a crazy huge backup project of all of my old images, transferring them from DVDs to external hard drives. And by “I took on” I really mean I recruited no fewer than 4 people to help me throughout the process. It was oodles of copy time, several terabytes of images, and even some film scanning. There’s a lot of stuff you can shoot in 13 years, apparently. There are still a few orphan copies that need to be matched up and since that is the most tedious part. They have been sitting there staring at me and giggling in high-pitched gnomish tones.

Can’t you just hear them giggle?

On a more personal note, check out my fancy new closet reorg from last week. Before (left) and after (right). I feel like I’m walking into a boutique every morning.

Now I just need to make the office look that awesome. Come here little stacks …

In the last month of 2010, I looked up and I realized I was on my way to having a Gnome collection.

[ left to right: ]

Gus/Gnomie – the original. He comes to the weddings!

Mr & Mrs UT Gnome- Thanks to Jennifer and Michael! Hook ‘em!

Nonna & Big Ears- a lovely gift for my birthday, named by little Miss Megan.

mini/travel gnome -From Joana, Gloria and other wonderful friends throughout the years. I have about 4 of these little guys  :)

Tim, the supervisor – Last year I lost hope that I would find another Gus so I (sadly) agreed to get a purchase a few Tims’. I think he looks downright grumpy so he actually never made it to a wedding.

holiday gnome – Christmas love from Sara & Anthony!

Word from home.

I’m recovering.

This past week marked my third attendance at the DWF & ImagingUSA. I spent my first convention conservatively going to bed before 10pm as I was sharing a hotel room with my husband, who happened to be in Phoenix working. The second convention in Nashville found me up until almost midnight. And this year in San Antonio? While I didn’t see the sun come up, 4:30 am was the last thing I saw before I dozed off.

A particularly busy week preceded my departure before the convention so I unfortunately had to leave a few things up in the air back home. On Wednesday, I received the following email from my husband, Nathan:

“I hope this message finds you in good health.  I fear morale here has taken a turn for the worse.  Wifery is in dangerously low supply.  Today we ran out of tomato paste.  I tried to put a brave face on for the cats but they can see right through me.  Only time will tell if we can survive this drought and make it through to the other side.  For now I take solace in the quiet afforded me by their apparent lack of interest, but I fear the cats may secretly be plotting against me.  Their meows are polite, but forced…they sense I’m losing my grip over the home front.  If this message finds you safely, please return as soon as possible with provisions; I fear I may not last the week.  The cats look deceptively fat, but their appearance belies a secret hunger to usurp my authority and claim rights to the food supply.  I lost face with the tomato paste; I fear it’s only a matter of time until one of them makes a move.  Please make haste in your return with provisions.

Best wishes,

Ulysses”
